(This speech was delivered by Syed Hamid Mohsin, chairman, Salaam Centre on 9th August 2009 at

In the name of Allah, the most beneficent, the most merciful
Nahmaduhu Wa Nusalli Ala Rasoolihil Kareem. Amma Baad
Respected president, chief guest, dear students!
Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmathullahi Wa Barakaatuhu
All praise be to Allah Who has created all of us. He has gifted human beings with the wealth of knowledge. It is with this knowledge alone that man is able to make such remarkable achievements, which astonishes a common man. Scientists believe that only ten percent of knowledge has been explored. We can imagine how much powerful the knowledge and wisdom of Almighty Allah might be. He is All Knowing and He alone is the biggest source of knowledge.
Countless Darud o Salaam to Prophet Muhammad (S) through whom the primary source of knowledge – The holy Qur’an reached the world. It is he who emphasized on the importance of knowledge so much so that it was made mandatory to acquire knowledge. Prophet Muhammad (S) said that every single step that moves towards acquiring knowledge is a step moving towards Jannah i.e. it takes one to paradise.
Acquiring knowledge is Ibadah. Knowledge is a source of success in both the worlds. Darkness of ignorance dispels with the light of knowledge. Knowledge can make a stone a diamond. The amount of importance laid to knowledge in Islam, no other religion has ever emphasized so much on it. The beginning of the revelation of the Qur’an was also with the mention of knowledge. Knowledge is mentioned in around 180 places in the holy Qur’an.
Besides education, Prophet Muhammad (S) had emphasized on (I) Observation and (II) Creativity. That is why, it was a result of his teachings itself that Muslims made remarkable achievements in the field of science and technology between 8th century and 13th century AD. World remembers the contributions of Muslims in important sectors of life such as Medicine, Algebra, Chemistry, Banking and law even today.
It is unfortunate that the purpose of education has changed today. Today the purpose of life has become to amass more and more wealth and facilitate all kinds of luxuries for self. Human being has become a means of production in today’s capitalistic world. If a person fulfils this criterion, he is respected, and if not, then he is turned down in disrespect. The policy of ‘hire and fire’ is in place in world today.
Whereas the concept of life that Islam promotes is so supreme that by following its principles, one’s life can become peaceful and successful. According to this concept alone a best society and a best nation can be evolved. Islam has described the purpose of life in Surah Azzaariyath thus: “I (Allah) have created not the Jinns and Humans except they should worship me (alone)”. What does Ibadath mean? It means to lead the entire life i.e. 24 X 7 according to the directions and guidance of Allah. Where can we get the guidance from Allah? We get it from the holy Qur’an and the Hadees. Allah’s worship demands that we acquire more and more knowledge. The more a person acquires knowledge the more he approaches nearer to Allah, because Islam and Qur’an are nearer to the realities of the world. Qur’an testifies the scientific facts. Qur’an is the only Divine book that promotes science and motivates us to endeavor for research. I shall present some of the verses of the Qur’an that mentions, testifies and guides regarding the scientific facts:
- Sky, earth, day, night, people who ponder. (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 190)
- Creation of human beings. (Surah Al Mu’minoon: 12-14)
- About mountains. (Surah An Naba: 6-7)
- About oceans. (Surah Al Furqaan: 53)
- Creation of human beings and life. (Surah Ambiya: 30-31, Surah Al Mu’minoon: 12-16, Surah Al Hashr:3)
- Creation of human in mother’s womb. (Surah Al Waqia: 57-59, Surah Al Mu’minoon: 12-14)
- About nature. (Surah Aal-e-Imran: 191-192)
- About environment. (Surah Al Hadeed: 7)
- About astronomy. (Surah Al Anaam:97, Surah Yunus:5, Surah Al Furqaan:61, Surah At Tariq:1-3)
- About atom. (Surah As Saba:22)
The purpose of presenting these verses is to increase our belief and imbibe confidence in us that the Qur’an and Hadees are the best source of guidance for a successful life.
Usually it is understood that according to the subject matter, Ibaadaath gains the first place, then comes character and finally comes society. Whereas, if the subjects of the Qur’anic chapters are categorized, then this notion will prove to be wrong. In fact more than 60 percent of the subjects of the chapters are related to this world which we have to harness. It is related to the society, wherein the human being should be trained and it is related to that philosophy of history, which can guide human beings. The detail of this categorization is as follows:
Physics and physical bodies
Society and Politics
History and Philosophy
Morality and life
No. of times
Qur’an provides a basis for a world view.
Respected audience and students!
I intend to present some astonishing facts before you. There are around two crore Jews and 200 crore Muslims in this world today. It means 200 Muslims in contrast with a single Jew. But analyze the situation. Today Jews are dominant in every field. A simple example is that for the last 105 years, 180 Jews has bagged the noble prize, whereas only three Muslims could make it. Why is it like this? It is because Jews and Christians have given importance to education. They have invested in it. They have contributed in this field. The foundation for the science and technology present today was laid by Muslims, but the same Muslims lost the ground gradually. So much so that there are only 500 universities in 60 Muslim countries, whereas there are 5750 universities in America alone. No university of Muslim world counts in the top 500 universities of the globe. There is 90 percent literacy in Christian world, whereas only 40 percent in Muslim world.
98 percent of Christian countries complete primary education, whereas only 50 percent of Muslim world complete the primary education. 40 percent of the Christian world reaches the university level, whereas only two percent of Muslim world reach the university level education.
This is the situation. We invest a lot on food, clothes, on different programmes and marriages. But when it comes to education we make excuses.
There is a famous quote; “If you are thinking of a few years’ prosperity, then do agriculture, if you are thinking of 10-20 years of prosperity, then plant trees and if you look for progress and prosperity of centuries, then educate your children.”
The second thing that I want to make clear here, I will be precise, do listen attentively and try to work on it as far as possible, so that we could get back our glory.
All of you are a part of the competitive race. Hence keep a target and struggle with strong determination to achieve it.
Plan about the future of your education from now itself. And remember, success is not only that you become a doctor or an engineer. We need Ph.D. doctors in science and sociology also. We need the best teachers and lecturers. We need journalists. We need I.A.S., I.P.S. and K.A.S. officers.
What is needed today is not just education but also a best personality. You should focus on the development of your personality. Personality doesn’t mean your outward look; instead it means your thoughts, emotions, actions and reactions.
You should value time. Make the right use of the time. Time is such a bounty that has been bestowed upon a rich, a poor, an intellectual and a fool in equal proportions. Hence time should be utilized in the right way.
Adopt good companionship. Today good companionship is a great wealth and bounty. Almighty Allah has ordained us to adopt good companionship in Surah Luqman of the holy Qur’an.
Increase your contact with Non-Muslim friends in your schools and colleges. You are a Da’yee in your school or college. Introduce Islam through your character and manners. Present them the Islamic literature. If any one of you needs Qur’an or Islamic literature for Da’wah purposes, then contact Salaam Centre. Insha Allah we will extend whole hearted cooperation.
Internet has become a hub of evil activities besides being a source of information. Use Internet only to the extent of necessity. Save yourselves from the evils of the internet. Today more and more evils are born in this world through this internet only. Internet Cafes are proving to be more dangerous than bars and clubs.
Offer prayers punctually. Maintain cleanliness. Adopt frugality.
Read at least three verses of the Qur’an with meaning without fail. Let us not read Qur’an just for some reward or as a formality. No doubt we will receive reward for reading it formally too, but it’s a right of the Qur’an on us that we read it with utmost care and with understanding. We spend a lot of time to study the college-syllabus books. We read a number of books to understand a single subject. But why don’t we read every subject and ponder over every single verse of the holy Qur’an in a similar manner? Today, an English translation of the holy Qur’an and a basic book on Islam “Towards Understanding Islam” is being presented by the Salaam Centre. Towards Understanding Islam is such a famous book, which has been translated into 70 different languages of the world. This book has been included in the syllabus of many schools of different countries. This book has changed the lives of thousands of people. This book has illuminated hearts of many people with the light of Iman. Cat Steven, a pop singer of 1970s, who was more famed than Michael Jackson in his time, became Yusuf Islam after reading this great book. He is running a renowned Islamic Centre in London now.
Irvin Madane, a noted social service activist, accepted Islam and became Imran Madane after reading this marvelous book.
A noted American writer, Maryam Jameela, also accepted Islam after having been impressed by this book.
Moulana Abu Hasan Ali Nadvi, a famous scholar had praised this book in these words; ‘This book, which is based on the basics of Islam, is very useful for students and youths’. Hence you should read, understand, practice, preach and propagate this wonderful book.
I congratulate you all from the core of my heart. All of you have acquired knowledge and excelled in your exams with utmost efforts. I hope your efforts and interest will continue, and you will serve the Muslim Ummah and humanity in the best manner in future with your similar achievements. The students of any community who illuminate the lamp of night with their dedicated efforts, their life brightens with the morning shine.
We are proud of you, and we hope that you will come out in flying colors and emerge as the best representatives of Islam and Muslims after completing your education. Today Islam is being targeted from all corners, which you have to defend efficiently. Not just this, but you have to also show the straight path of Islam to the astray world by being Da’yee Ilallah.
